Antique Folk Art  |  Antique Oak & Country Furniture

An 18th Century Welsh Primitive Comb-back Windsor Armchair.

A large Welsh primitive comb-back Windsor armchair in completely original condition of exceptional craftsmanship, colour and patination – constructed in Oak & Ash – lately from from a private collection.

Its four legs pegged underneath to the 2″ thick seat which is chamfered beneath. The impressive stature of the chair embodied by the lower spindles which have a 20 mm diameter, while the girth of the single piece arm-bow reaches nearly 30″ . So, in terms of proportions it is a brute of a Windsor & heavy too!

The gentleman that I purchased it from was of the opinion that it originated in ‘Snowdonia’, though what is not contestable is how pure it is. It is an outstanding piece of vernacular furniture, robust and untouched, possessing a fabulous golden colour and patina.
