A Red Mulberry Prie-Dieu Child’s Chair
Though designed in the French taste perhaps the most significant feature of this child’s prie-dieu chair is that it is constructed in Red-Mulberry wood. Considering this timber is native to the south-eastern U.S. this is possibly where it originated.
Red Mulberry (Morus Rubia) is described on page 366 of Harold Baily Nogle’s book ‘A Guide to the Useful Woods of the World’ where the section regarding this particular timber concludes with the following sentence, ‘It is an outstanding wood for furniture when properly cut and dried.’
This chair has been subjected to a dendrology test at Kew.
