A Welsh Love Spoon from an important collection.
The long handle of this spoon suggests an 18th century date while the shape of the handle’s terminal is itself reminiscent of a heart shape and is attended with three carved rings. The spoon has a deep rich colour and patination its scraffito decoration revealing on the handle the name W.Walter which is embellished above with a heart, decoration that is possibly infilled with black-wax – bearing in mind that it also has a cawl shaped bowl – this may indicate that it was sailor made.
Provenance: formerly in the Eila Grahame collection.
