An 18th Century Documentary
Repoussé Decorated ‘Tinder Box.’
It could be said, that this article being made of copper would have looked a bit garish when new. It is embellished with the initials ‘J.N.’ and the year ‘1791’ in which it was fashionably decorated with swags and the words ‘TINDER BOX.’ Thankfully it has developed a wonderful deep bronze patina while retaining to its interior its original lead-lined damper.
Provenance.
It was formerly owned by ‘W. Palmer’ of Bletchingdon, Oxon. Who adorned it with name and the date ‘1836’ its underside is carved to this effect. In more recent years it was owned by the well-known Antiques dealer Nellie Lensen-Smith from whose estate it was purchased.
Dated 1791 Size: 7” x 7” 18cms x 18cms Pine/Copper/Lead. £ SOLD
