A Bull in a Byre

This compassionate study of a Shorthorn Bull is faintly signed in the bottom left hand corner W.J.Gilbert 1862. It is quite typical of his work. He was an itinerate artist from Halesworth in Suffolk and is known to have exhibited at the Portland gallery and is recorded as having painted studies of horses, dogs, cattle and other animals.

There are two charming landscapes by him in the Southwold museum in Suffolk. The painting retains its original frame.
