– Sussex Pottery –
Though often associated with the north of England ‘Salt Kits’ were made in various parts of the country including Sussex and there is a Brown-ware example in the Marlipins Museum in Shoreham-by-sea. The wavy pie-crust decoration surrounding the aperture I have seen on a number of pots from Rye and the patterns of the iron oxide particles displayed on the surface of this pot are very similar to others I have seen from the Rye pottery’s. This particular example is elaborately decorated with various waves and squiggles and dots and there are some losses to these areas of slip.
